For everyone living across the Yamuna, from Mayur Vihar and Laxmi Nagar to Shahdara, Dilshad Garden, Seelampur and Karawal Nagar, the court is Karkardooma. This page explains the three districts the complex serves, what each block and office does, where the family courts actually sit, how bail, cheque, property and matrimonial cases run here, how to track your case online, and how to find an advocate who appears at Karkardooma daily. Send your details through the form and an enrolment-checked advocate from these courts can ring you. Clients pay nothing for this.
Karkardooma Courts, near the Karkardooma Metro station on the Blue and Pink Lines, are the district courts for East, North East and Shahdara Delhi. The complex began working on 15 May 1993. Criminal cases from police stations in these three districts, and civil disputes about property or people there up to Rs 2 crore, are heard here. The East and North East family courts sit in a separate building in Vishwas Nagar, about a kilometre away, while the Shahdara family court is on the third floor of the main building. Labour courts have moved to Dwarka. Use the CNR number on the eCourts app to find your court and date, and pick an advocate who appears regularly in that court.

Before 1993, residents of the trans-Yamuna area had to cross the river to Tis Hazari for every hearing. Karkardooma was the first district court complex built east of the Yamuna, and its opening brought courts within reach of a fast-growing population that now runs into many lakhs. The Delhi Judicial Academy once worked from here before moving to Dwarka, and labour courts and industrial tribunals that used to sit here have also shifted to Dwarka. What remains is a busy complex for civil, criminal, accident and matrimonial cases of three districts.
Karkardooma has also handled some of the city's most closely followed criminal trials. In June 2020 the Delhi High Court designated specific magistrate and sessions courts here for cases arising from the communal violence in North East Delhi earlier that year, and those trials have continued for years.
Each district has its own Principal District and Sessions Judge, its own magistrates, and its own legal services authority, all housed at Karkardooma. Which one handles your case depends on the police station or the location of the property or parties.
| District | Typical areas (indicative) |
|---|---|
| East | Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Preet Vihar, Mayur Vihar, Patparganj, Pandav Nagar, Mandawali, Kalyanpuri, Trilokpuri, Anand Vihar |
| Shahdara | Shahdara, Vivek Vihar, Dilshad Garden, Seemapuri, Krishna Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Jagatpuri, Mansarovar Park, Jhilmil |
| North East | Seelampur, Jafrabad, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Gokulpuri, Mustafabad, Karawal Nagar, Nand Nagri, Harsh Vihar, Sonia Vihar |
District lines follow police station boundaries, which do not always match colony names. The quickest check is the police station printed on your FIR or the address of the property in dispute, searched on the eCourts portal. A matter that arose across the border in Ghaziabad or Noida belongs to the Uttar Pradesh courts, not Karkardooma, even if you live in East Delhi.
Karkardooma is organised in lettered blocks. B-Block is the tallest at six storeys; A and C Blocks have three; the lawyers' chambers are in a separate building. The map below is drawn from the Karkardooma citizen charter, which predates the creation of the Shahdara district and lists 70 courts at the time. Courts have been added since, and offices can move, so confirm at the Facilitation Centre.
| Need | Office | Location in the charter |
|---|---|---|
| Which court has my case, filing a new case or bail application | Facilitation Centre and centralised filing counter | Ground floor, I-Block |
| Certified copies | Copying agencies (civil, criminal, sessions) | Third floor, J-Block |
| Summons, notices, warrants | Nazarat (process-serving branch) | Third floor, J-Block |
| Old civil files | Civil record room | Second floor, K-Block |
| Old criminal files | Criminal record room | Fourth floor, J-Block |
| Old sessions files | Sessions record room | Fifth floor, L-Block |
| Accident claim files | MACT record room | Sixth floor, L-Block |
| Free legal aid | Legal services office | Ground floor, A-Block |
| Mediation | Mediation centre | Ground floor, B-Block |
| Fines, fees, challans | Cash branch | Ground floor, A-Block |
| Affidavits | Oath commissioners and notaries | First floor, D-Block (charter lists Rs 10 and Rs 15) |
| Stamp paper, typing, photocopies | Vendors and typists | Ground floor, D-Block |
| Video conferencing | Video conference room | Court Room 61, third floor, B-Block |
| Police help | Police post | Basement, A-Block |
| Medical | Delhi Government dispensary | Basement, I-Block |
| Bank, ATM, post | UCO Bank branch, SBI and UCO ATMs; post office opposite Gate No. 3 | Within the complex; post office on the ground floor of J-Block |
| Wheelchair | Care Taking Branch | Room 312, third floor, A-Block |
| RTI on administrative matters | RTI cell | Third floor, administration branch |
Parking is provided separately for two-wheelers and cars. Lifts serve every floor, drinking water and toilets are available in all buildings, and there is seating inside and outside courtrooms.
This catches out many first-time visitors. According to the East district administration, the family courts for the three districts do not all sit in the main complex.
Check the court's name on your summons or the eCourts app. If it says "Family Court, East" or "Family Court, North East", go to Vishwas Nagar; if it says "Family Court, Shahdara", stay in the main building. Domestic violence applications and criminal matrimonial cases are heard by magistrates in the main complex, so a family can have hearings in both places in the same week.
| Suit value | Court |
|---|---|
| Up to Rs 3 lakh | Civil Judge of the district at Karkardooma |
| Over Rs 3 lakh, up to Rs 2 crore | District Judge or Additional District Judge at Karkardooma |
| Over Rs 2 crore | Delhi High Court, original side |
Offences reserved for the sessions court, such as murder, rape and dacoity, are tried by the Additional Sessions Judges after committal; the rest are tried by Metropolitan Magistrates. Each police station is linked to a particular magistrate's court in its district.
A large number of advocates practise at Karkardooma, most of them members of the Shahdara Bar Association with chambers in the lawyers' block. For your case, what counts is regular presence in the right court and honest advice.
Describe the problem briefly in the form near the top of this page. Delhi advocates on Mara Vakil who handle such matters, each with verified enrolment, see the request without your number, and whoever accepts calls you. It costs you nothing; the professional fee is settled between you and the advocate you choose. You can also read how to choose an advocate and the legal fees guide.
When police in East, North East or Shahdara arrest someone, the person is brought before the magistrate linked to that police station at Karkardooma within 24 hours of arrest, or before the duty magistrate on holidays. The remand advocate on duty in that court, provided free by the legal services authority, can argue for bail if the family has not yet found a lawyer.
| Stage | Who decides | BNSS provision |
|---|---|---|
| Police or judicial custody after arrest | Metropolitan Magistrate | Section 187 |
| Bail in a bailable offence | Police or magistrate, as of right | Section 478 |
| Bail in a non-bailable offence triable by a magistrate | Metropolitan Magistrate | Section 480 |
| Bail in a sessions case, or after the magistrate refuses | Additional Sessions Judge | Section 483 |
| Anticipatory bail | Sessions court of the district, or the High Court | Section 482 |
| Default bail when the charge sheet is late | The remanding court | Section 187(3) |
Practical points for families: get the FIR number and sections, arrange a surety with identity and property or salary papers, and gather proof of the accused's job, studies and family in Delhi. Courts look at whether the person is likely to appear for trial. More detail: bail application guide, bail lawyers in Delhi and criminal lawyers in Delhi.
Send a written complaint to the SHO and then to the DCP of the district (East, North East or Shahdara). If there is still no FIR, apply to the magistrate at Karkardooma under section 175(3) of the BNSS with proof of those complaints.
Trans-Yamuna Delhi has thousands of traders, wholesalers and small manufacturers, from the Gandhi Nagar garment market to the industrial areas of Patparganj and Jhilmil, and cheque disputes are a constant part of Karkardooma's work. Five of the 34 digital courts for Negotiable Instruments Act complaints opened in Delhi in June 2025 are here, working with e-filing and online hearings.
Tools: cheque bounce calculator, cheque bounce notice service.
The trans-Yamuna districts grew in waves: planned DDA colonies and group housing societies in Mayur Vihar and Patparganj, older settlements in Shahdara, and large unauthorised colonies in the north east. Each pattern brings typical disputes.
Colonies such as parts of Karawal Nagar, Sonia Vihar and Mustafabad were built on land sold through power of attorney and agreements to sell. Since the Supreme Court's decision in Suraj Lamp (2011), such papers are not treated as transferring ownership, but possession is protected by law and the PM-UDAY scheme allows residents of notified colonies to apply to the DDA for conveyance deeds or authorisation slips. Suits for injunction, declaration and possession over these properties are frequent at Karkardooma. Collect every document in the chain, electricity and water bills, house tax records and photographs.
Many flats in Patparganj, I.P. Extension and Mayur Vihar belong to cooperative group housing societies. Disputes between a member and the society, such as over membership, transfer or maintenance charges, are generally dealt with under the Delhi Cooperative Societies Act, 2003 through the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and the Delhi Cooperative Tribunal, rather than the civil courts. Disputes between neighbours or with outsiders still go to Karkardooma.
Leasehold DDA flats in Mayur Vihar, Dilshad Garden and Kondli can be converted to freehold through the DDA. Disputes over unpaid conversion, mutation and sale through GPA often surface when an owner dies or wants to sell. Civil suits for declaration or specific performance over such flats come to Karkardooma if below Rs 2 crore in value.
Rent Controllers at Karkardooma hear disputes under the Delhi Rent Control Act for older tenancies with rent up to Rs 3,500 a month, common in Shahdara and Gandhi Nagar markets. Newer residential lettings in Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur and Preet Vihar, often to students preparing for exams, usually carry higher rent and are recovered through civil suits.
Structures on the Yamuna floodplain or government land often face demolition or removal notices. These are usually challenged before the authority concerned and, for urgent relief, the Delhi High Court rather than the civil courts at Karkardooma. Get advice the day a notice arrives.
See property lawyers in Delhi, civil lawyers in Delhi and the Delhi stamp duty calculator.
Marriage disputes from the three districts are split between the family courts (in Vishwas Nagar for East and North East; in the main building for Shahdara) and the magistrates' courts in the main complex.
| Case | Where at Karkardooma |
|---|---|
| Divorce, judicial separation, restitution | Family court of the district |
| Maintenance under section 144 BNSS or personal law | Family court of the district |
| Child custody and guardianship | Family court of the district |
| Domestic violence: protection, residence, monetary relief | Metropolitan Magistrate, main complex |
| Criminal complaint of cruelty or dowry (section 85 BNS, earlier 498A IPC) | Metropolitan Magistrate after investigation |
| Dowry death or other sessions offences | Sessions court, main complex |
See divorce lawyers in Delhi, family lawyers in Delhi and how to file for divorce.
Road accidents on the busy roads around Anand Vihar, the Vikas Marg corridor and the NH-9 approach produce many claims before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunals at Karkardooma, whose files are kept in the MACT record room on the sixth floor of L-Block. The police are required to send a detailed accident report to the tribunal, which can start the claim. Insurers often settle at Lok Adalats when the offer matches what the tribunal would likely award.
For unpaid dues backed by invoices, written contracts or acknowledgments, a summary suit under Order XXXVII of the Civil Procedure Code is the fastest civil route. Commercial disputes of Rs 3 lakh and above go to the commercial courts after the mandatory mediation attempt, unless urgent relief is needed. See legal notice.
Each of the three districts has a page on the national eCourts district portal, and all are on the eCourts services app.
| Task | How |
|---|---|
| Next date and court | Search by CNR on the app, or by case number, party, advocate, or FIR and police station on the district portal |
| Today's list | Open the court's cause list on the portal and find your item number |
| Orders | Download daily orders and judgments from the case page |
| New filing | Use the national e-filing portal for eligible matters, paying court fee online |
| Hearing by video | Digital cheque courts work online; for other courts your advocate can apply; the video conference room is Court Room 61 in B-Block |
| Caveat | File through the district's caveat email or counter so you are heard before any order against you; valid for 90 days |
Pick the right district first. A case from Vivek Vihar police station is a Shahdara case; one from Laxmi Nagar is East; one from Bhajanpura is North East. Searching the wrong district's portal is the most common reason people "cannot find" their case.
The East, North East and Shahdara District Legal Services Authorities each run front offices that assign panel lawyers, give advice, place remand advocates in criminal courts, help with victim compensation and accident claims, and organise Lok Adalats. Their helpline numbers listed in the DSLSA directory are 9667992793 (East), 9667992794 (North East) and 9667992795 (Shahdara); the round-the-clock helpline is 1516. There is no income test for women, children, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe members, anyone in custody, people with disabilities and certain other groups; others qualify with annual income up to Rs 3 lakh (Rs 4 lakh for senior citizens and transgender persons). Check with the eligibility checker.
Karkardooma's mediation centre has worked since May 2006. Court cases are referred to it, and people can also bring disputes that have not reached court. A successful mediation produces a binding settlement, and court fee on a pending suit is refunded. Family, rent, partition, money and business disputes are regularly settled here.
Karkardooma is one of the seven district complexes sitting on Sunday, 25 October 2026. Apply to your court to list a pending cheque, accident, recovery, compoundable criminal or non-divorce family case; apply to the district legal services authority at least seven days ahead for a dispute not yet in court. Traffic challans need a slip from the Delhi Traffic Police portal from 19 October. See the Delhi Lok Adalat guide.
The people are invented; the routes their cases took are typical of Karkardooma.
Salim, a garment wholesaler, received a Rs 3.4 lakh cheque from a retailer that came back for insufficient funds. He sent a notice within the 30-day window, waited out the 15 days, and filed a complaint that was allotted to one of the digital cheque courts at Karkardooma. The retailer paid through the link in the summons along with agreed costs, and the case was closed in under three months.
A student preparing for exams was arrested after a scuffle at a PG accommodation. Produced before the magistrate for the Laxmi Nagar police station, he was represented first by the remand advocate. His family, calling from Bihar, found a Karkardooma advocate through Mara Vakil who filed for bail the next morning with his coaching institute's identity card and a local surety. Bail followed the same day.
Shabana, living with her parents in Seelampur with two children, applied for maintenance at the North East family court in Vishwas Nagar, and for protection and residence under the domestic violence law before a magistrate at the main complex. Both affidavits of income were filed, interim maintenance was fixed, and the couple were sent to mediation, where they agreed on monthly support and school fees.
Rakesh had bought a plot in 2010 on GPA and an agreement to sell. When a relative of the seller tried to occupy it, his advocate filed for a permanent injunction at Karkardooma with his possession proof, bills and PM-UDAY application, and obtained an interim order protecting his possession.
Mrs Bhatia's late husband's flat in a cooperative group housing society was not being transferred to her name. Her advocate explained that the remedy lay with the Registrar of Cooperative Societies under the cooperative law, not a civil suit at Karkardooma, and helped her apply there with the death certificate and nomination papers.
A delivery worker injured in a collision on Vikas Marg filed a claim before the accident tribunal at Karkardooma with medical bills and income proof. The insurer's offer at the Lok Adalat matched the likely award, and he accepted it, receiving payment within weeks.
The owner of a shop let at Rs 1,200 a month under the Delhi Rent Control Act needed it for his son's business. The Rent Controller at Karkardooma heard his eviction petition on bona fide requirement through the summary procedure and, after refusing the tenant leave to defend, ordered eviction.
Free legal aid is available to every woman regardless of income. Protection officers can help file domestic violence applications, and the magistrate can grant urgent protection orders. Ask the legal services front office for a woman panel lawyer if you prefer.
The north east and Shahdara districts are home to many workers from other states. You do not need a Delhi address proof to get legal aid where your case is. For unpaid wages or wrongful termination, the labour authorities and the labour courts at Dwarka are the right forum; criminal and family matters stay at Karkardooma.
Older residents facing neglect or harassment from relatives can use the Senior Citizens Act through the maintenance tribunal, in addition to civil and criminal remedies here. Courts often give priority to elderly litigants on request, and the legal aid income limit for senior citizens in Delhi is Rs 4 lakh. See the bedakhli process guide.
Traders and units in Patparganj, Jhilmil and the Gandhi Nagar market appear through an authorised representative with a resolution or authority letter, and should keep invoices, ledgers and messages organised, because commercial courts expect documents to be filed with the plaint.
People across East, North East and Shahdara search for advocates who appear at Karkardooma, often the day trouble starts. A free, enrolment-checked profile on Mara Vakil sets out where you practise and what you handle in plain factual terms, within the Bar Council of India's rules, with no ratings, rankings or paid placement. You choose which requests to accept, and Mara Vakil takes no commission on your fees.
Fill in the form at the top of the page or talk to an advocate. Enrolment-checked Delhi advocates on Mara Vakil who take such cases see your request, and the one who accepts calls you. You pay nothing for this, and you agree the fee for the legal work with the advocate. If you cannot afford one, the legal services authorities at Karkardooma will appoint a lawyer free.
Also useful: lawyers in Delhi, Tis Hazari Court, Saket Court, and Delhi pages for criminal, bail, divorce, family, property, consumer and labour lawyers, plus all legal calculators.
Mara Vakil is a technology platform, not a law firm, and is not connected with the Karkardooma Courts.
Plan for the whole morning. Most hearings are short, but waiting can be long.

| Maintenance or domestic violence | Marriage proof, children's documents, income evidence of both spouses, expense details, earlier complaints, medical records if any |
| Possession or injunction | Title chain or GPA and agreement, PM-UDAY papers, bills in your name, house tax receipts, photographs, police complaints |
| Rent eviction | Ownership papers, rent receipts or agreement, evidence of your need for the premises |
| Accident claim | FIR, detailed accident report, hospital records and bills, income proof, vehicle and insurance details |
| Recovery or commercial | Contracts, purchase orders, invoices, ledgers, emails and messages, the mediation non-starter report |
| Matter | Typical pace at Karkardooma |
|---|---|
| Bail after arrest | Same day to a few days |
| Interim maintenance | A few months after both income affidavits are filed |
| Mutual consent divorce | Around six months, faster if the gap is waived |
| Cheque case where the accused pays early | A few weeks to a few months |
| Eviction for bona fide need under rent control | Months, through the summary procedure |
| Contested property suits and criminal trials | Often several years |
Timelines depend on the court's list, adjournments and the number of witnesses. Mediation and Lok Adalat settlements are the fastest exits.
Plan for court fee on plaints and petitions (higher in property suits, where it depends on value), process fee for summons, oath commissioner and notary charges for affidavits, typing and photocopies, certified copies of orders and evidence, and travel for each date. Keep every receipt and ask your advocate at the start for a rough budget. The fee for the advocate's work is agreed between you and the advocate.
A large share of homes in the North East and Shahdara districts stand in colonies that grew without approved layouts. In 2019 Parliament passed the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Recognition of Property Rights of Residents in Unauthorised Colonies) Act, and the PM-UDAY scheme followed. Residents of the notified colonies, of which there are well over a thousand across Delhi, can apply online to the DDA for a conveyance deed or authorisation slip, after the property is measured and the prescribed charges are paid.
Compoundable offences can be settled at any stage with the court's permission, and many cases between neighbours or relatives end this way.
The court can refer the parties to the mediation centre at any point. A settlement there ends the suit and earns a refund of court fee.
When a magistrate at Karkardooma sends someone to judicial custody, the family's worries shift from the courtroom to the jail. Delhi's prisoners are held in three prison complexes: Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli. Mandoli, in North East Delhi near Shahdara, is the closest to Karkardooma, but the jail is decided by the prison administration, not by the family.
Cyber fraud, from fake job offers to UPI scams and "digital arrest" calls, now forms a large part of complaints in every Delhi district. Each police district, including East, North East and Shahdara, has a cyber police station.
See cyber lawyers in Delhi if you need help with release of frozen funds or a criminal case.
Settlements in matrimonial and property disputes often come together in mediation or at a Lok Adalat. Before you sign, check that the document:
A careful settlement saves years. A rushed one can start a fresh round of litigation.
Domestic violence proceedings are civil in nature even though they are heard by a magistrate. They often run alongside a maintenance case in the family court; courts set off one maintenance award against the other, so the same expense is not paid for twice.
In closely built colonies such as those around Shahdara, Seelampur and Mustafabad, disputes over common walls, drains, staircases, encroachment on lanes and unauthorised construction are common. The usual sequence is a complaint to the municipal authority, a police complaint if there is violence or threats, and, where needed, a civil suit for injunction at Karkardooma with photographs, site plans and witnesses. Courts can appoint a local commissioner to visit the site and report. Mediation works well in these disputes because neighbours have to go on living side by side.
Not every family dispute involving an elderly parent needs to start at Karkardooma. The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 sets up tribunals, headed in Delhi by sub-divisional magistrates, that can order children or relatives who will inherit to pay monthly maintenance, and can act against neglect. Under Delhi's rules, the district administration can also help a senior citizen whose children or relatives refuse to leave a self-acquired home. Applications are simple, lawyers are not essential, and the tribunal is meant to decide within a few months.
Where the dispute is really about title, a forged document or a large estate, a civil suit at Karkardooma or, for high values, the High Court may still be needed. Many families use both routes: the tribunal for immediate maintenance and protection, and the civil court for the property question. A gift made by an elderly parent on condition of care can be declared void under section 23 of the Act if the condition is broken.
Many people pass the legal aid office at Karkardooma without realising how much it offers. Walk in with your papers and you can:
If you are not eligible for a free lawyer, the front office can still guide you on the process, and you can find a private advocate through Mara Vakil.
