This policy applies to every advocate who lists on Mara Vakil. It is designed to keep listings accurate, protect clients, and help advocates stay within the Advocates Act, 1961 and the Bar Council of India Rules.
Who can list
- Advocates enrolled with a State Bar Council and entitled to practise in India.
- One profile per advocate, in the advocate's own name. Firms and agents cannot list advocates without their written consent.
Verification
Before a profile goes live we check the enrolment number, State Bar Council and identity details you give us, and we may ask for your enrolment certificate or Bar Council ID card. We may re-check details at any time and suspend a profile if they cannot be confirmed.
What a profile may show
To stay within the Bar Council rules on advertising, profiles show only particulars of the kind permitted for advocates: name, enrolment number and State Bar Council, year of enrolment, professional and academic qualifications, areas of practice, courts and forums, languages, and contact details. Profiles must be factual.
What a profile must not show
- Claims such as "best lawyer", "No. 1", success rates, case-win counts or guaranteed results.
- Testimonials or endorsements arranged by the advocate, or photographs with judges or celebrities used to attract work.
- Fee comparisons or discount offers designed to solicit work.
- Anything false, misleading or disparaging about other advocates.
Client requests
- Client matters are shown to advocates who handle that area and court. Accept only matters you are able to handle.
- Client contact details are shared only after you accept. Use them only for that matter and keep them confidential.
- Agree the fee and scope with the client in writing and give a proper receipt for every payment. Never tell a client they must pay Mara Vakil — the platform is free for clients.
Fees for advocates
Joining, being listed and accepting client requests are free for advocates at present. Mara Vakil takes no share of your professional fees, does not sell rank, "featured" or "best lawyer" positions, and does not guarantee any number of requests or engagements. If paid plans are introduced later, their terms will be published and accepted by you before any payment is taken.
Conduct and removal
We may warn, suspend or remove a profile for false details, misconduct, complaints from clients, off-platform payment requests, or breach of this policy or the Terms of Use. Clients may also complain about professional misconduct to the State Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961.
Your control
You can ask us to correct, pause or remove your profile at any time by writing to help@maravakil.in. We act on such requests promptly.
