Marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, before the Marriage Officer. Open to couples of any religion. Book online in two minutes and a Mara Vakil team member calls you to take it forward.
A court marriage is solemnised before the Marriage Officer (usually the SDM) of the district where at least one partner has lived for the last 30 days. Typical timeline: about 30 to 45 days, because the law requires a 30-day notice period. Booking on Mara Vakil is free, and our team confirms the documents and total cost on a call before any work starts.
A court marriage is solemnised before the Marriage Officer (usually the SDM) of the district where at least one partner has lived for the last 30 days. A notice of intended marriage is filed first, the law requires a 30-day notice period, and the marriage is then solemnised in the presence of three witnesses and the certificate is issued.

The fixed part is the 30-day notice period. After the notice is filed, it is displayed at the Marriage Officer's office so that anyone can raise a legal objection within 30 days. Once that period is over, the marriage can be solemnised on a date given by the office. In practice the total is about 30 to 45 days. Delays usually come from a mismatch in names or dates of birth across documents, weak residence proof, the slot calendar of the SDM office, a holiday falling on the appointment, or an objection that the Marriage Officer has to inquire into before going ahead.

At the end you receive a marriage certificate entered in the Marriage Certificate Book and signed by the Marriage Officer, both of you and the three witnesses. It is conclusive proof that the marriage was solemnised under the Act. Use it to add a spouse name in a passport, apply for a spouse visa, update bank nominations, insurance and employer records, and as the base document if the wife later chooses to change her surname.

The Act requires the notice to be displayed at the Marriage Officer's office, and a copy goes to the Marriage Officer of the district where a partner permanently lives if that is a different district. The law does not require a letter to your parents. Office practice can vary, so the team explains what your district actually does before you file.
Yes. The Act is open to any two eligible persons, whether they share a religion or not. Many Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian couples choose it because it gives a government certificate directly from the Marriage Officer and does not need a religious ceremony.
An objection must be on a legal ground, such as an existing marriage, underage partner or prohibited relationship. The Marriage Officer inquires into it and decides within the time set by the Act. A personal objection, such as a family not liking the match, is not a legal ground to stop the marriage.
Witnesses do not have to be relatives. Any three adults of sound mind with valid ID and address proof can act as witnesses. They must be present in person on the date of solemnisation and sign the certificate book in front of the Marriage Officer.
Yes, as long as one partner meets the 30-day residence condition in the district. The NRI partner usually needs a passport, visa or OCI details, and a document showing single status from the country of residence. The team checks these papers carefully because they cause most delays in such cases.
